10 Things People Keep Asking Me about Interior Insights (Jane)

Over the past few years, I've received thousands of comments, emails, and messages from people who discovered Interior Insights through YouTube, Instagram, or one of my courses.
Instead of answering those questions one by one, I thought I'd collect the ones I get most often in one place.

1.Who are you, Jane?
I'm Jane, the co founder of Interior Insights and the host of every home tour, design breakdown, and educational resource you see here.
People usually discover me through our YouTube channel, where I visit homes around the world and break down the design decisions that make them work.
But Interior Insights has always been about much more than filming beautiful spaces.
My goal is to help people understand why a room feels the way it does.
Why one living room immediately feels calm.
Why another feels cluttered even though it contains beautiful furniture.
Why some homes seem timeless while others quickly feel dated.
Those questions have fascinated me for years, and they're still the reason I do what I do today.
2. How did you become interested in interior design?
Looking back, I think it started much earlier than I realized.
I grew up between Germany, New Zealand, and Bali. During those years, my family ran a small hotel in Bali, and although I certainly didn't think of it this way as a child, I was constantly surrounded by spaces that had been carefully designed for other people.
As a child, I couldn't have explained any of that. I just knew some spaces felt wonderful to be in.
Only years later did I realized I had been observing design long before I had the vocabulary to describe it.
That curiosity never really left me.
Even now, whenever I travel, I find myself paying attention to how spaces are put together. I'll notice how daylight moves through a room, how materials reflect light differently throughout the day, or why one hotel lobby feels inviting while another somehow falls flat.
3. Did Jane study interior design?
Yes :)
I studied Interior Architecture at the IU International University of Applied Sciences.
That gave me a framework for understanding ideas that had already interested me for years. Suddenly there were words for concepts I'd been noticing intuitively, things like proportion, circulation, rhythm, scale, hierarchy, and materiality.
But I also learned that good design isn't something you memorize.
It's something you train yourself to see.
4. Why did Jane start Interior Insights?
Interestingly, I didn't start with the idea of building a business.
I simply loved discovering interesting homes.
Whenever I visited a beautifully designed apartment or house, I found myself wanting to document it. Not because it was expensive or luxurious, but because every great space seemed to have something worth learning from.
Why did the architect place the dining table there?
Why did this room feel so calm?
Why did these colors work together so naturally?
Why did this tiny apartment feel larger than it actually was?
Those questions became more interesting than simply showing another beautiful home.
That's really where Interior Insights began.
Not as a channel about interiors, but as a place to understand them.
5. How do you find the homes you film?
This is probably one of the questions I receive most often.
There isn't one simple answer.
Some homeowners reach out after watching the channel.
Sometimes architects, artists or interior designers introduce me to projects they think would be interesting.
Occasionally I'll discover a home through research and ask whether the owners would be open to filming.
And sometimes opportunities appear completely unexpectedly while I'm traveling.
What matters most isn't whether a home is expensive or famous.
I'm looking for spaces that tell a personal design story.
Sometimes that's a beautifully renovated apartment.
Sometimes it's a tiny rental with incredibly thoughtful solutions.
Sometimes it's a family home that has evolved naturally over many years.
If I walk away thinking, "People could genuinely learn from this," then it's exactly the kind of home I want to feature.

6. What makes Interior Insights different?
There are countless places online where you can look at beautiful homes.
I enjoy those too.
But I've always felt there was something missing.
Many sources stop at showing the finished result.
I want to go one step further.
I want to explain the thoughts and process behind the design.
The relationships between materials.
The way light changes throughout the day.
Why certain proportions feel balanced.
Why one layout supports daily life better than another.
Those ideas matter much more than copying individual pieces of furniture.
Trends change constantly.
Good design principles don't.
If I can help someone understand those principles, they'll be able to apply them whether they're decorating a small rental apartment, renovating an old farmhouse, or building a new home from scratch.
That's a much more valuable skill than simply knowing what's fashionable this year.
7. Where can I learn from you?
If you're interested in long-form design analysis, YouTube is where you'll find my home tours and in-depth breakdowns.
If you'd like shorter design observations, behind-the-scenes moments, and ideas from everyday life, our Instagram is the best place to follow along.
On this website you'll find everything else I create, including blog posts like this one, my Color Palettes, my Interior Workbook, my Color Masterclass, free resources, and opportunities to work with me directly.
No matter where you found Interior Insights, I'm genuinely grateful you're here.
I hope that the next time you walk into a room, whether it's your own home, a café, a hotel, or a friend's apartment, you'll pause for a moment and ask yourself a different question.
Not "Do I like this?"
But "Why does this space feel the way it does?"
Once you start asking that question, you'll never look at interiors in quite the same way again.
8. Does Jane offer Interior Design Consultations?
Yes, I do!
I offer 1-to-1 consultations where we focus on your specific questions, challenges, and goals. And of course full-service interior design.
Some people come to me because they're renovating an entire home and want clarity before making major decisions. Others are struggling with something much smaller, like choosing a colour palette, improving the layout of a room, or understanding why their space doesn't feel quite right.
What I enjoy most about these sessions is helping people see their homes differently.
Often the biggest improvement doesn't come from buying more furniture. It comes from understanding what's already there and making more intentional decisions.
Because every consultation requires preparation and individual feedback, I only open a limited number of appointments at a time. That allows me to give each person my full attention rather than rushing through a busy schedule.
9. Can I submit my home for a home tour?
Absolutely. (apply here).
Some of my favourite homes I've ever filmed weren't the biggest or the most expensive.
They were homes with thoughtful ideas, interesting solutions, or a unique story to tell.
I'm much more interested in spaces that teach something than spaces that simply look luxurious.
Whether it's a compact city apartment, a carefully renovated farmhouse, a creative rental, or a family home that's evolved over many years, I'm always looking for places that inspire people to think differently about design.
If you think your home could be a good fit, I'd love to hear from you.
You can apply here.
10. What makes a home interesting enough for you to film?
This is probably the biggest misconception about the channel.
People often assume I'm looking for the biggest house, the highest budget, or the most luxurious interior.
I'm not.
Some of my favourite homes have been surprisingly small, lived in, or built on modest budgets. What catches my attention is thoughtful design. A home where every decision has a purpose will almost always be more interesting to me than a home filled with expensive furniture.
I'm looking for spaces that have something to teach. And a story to tell.
Maybe it's an ingenious floor plan that makes a compact apartment feel twice its size. Maybe it's the way natural light moves through the rooms during the day. Maybe it's a renovation that respects the history of the building while making it work beautifully for modern life.
Those are the homes I get excited about.
Before every shoot, I ask myself one simple question:
Will someone see their own home differently after watching this?
If the answer is yes, then it's exactly the kind of story I want to share.
